Ember Vs. Earth

Authors note: The author’s purpose is to show the main differences and similarities between Ember and Earth.

Have you ever wanted to explore a different place or something known as a new world? Have you ever wondered how life may be if you had to leave all your valuables and belongings behind? In the book “The City of Ember” Doon and Lina live in a small underground city with little supplies and lack of education. People were deported down here because of a war that was about to occur so that mankind wouldn’t be extinct. They have no idea theres another place besides Ember until Lina finds this note with instructions on how to evacuate the city. Although Ember might not be advanced technologically and have everything we do as of now, it still has people like we do, but lack of education, supplies, and utilities.

Although Ember has supplies in it, but it doesn’t have all the things you would need to acquire for an everyday life. Also, Ember doesn’t have all these high-en quality things like Earth does, they have very little resources and buildings and other sorts of resources. Ember is a small place unlike Earth, but it does have resources, just not as much. The town has very little color to it. It’s more of darker boring shades rather than fun colorful colors like Earth. There isn’t much activity in Ember and there is very little crime, but it’s much different in Earth because the habitat is so much bigger.

On the other hand, Ember lacks in education and many other common sense qualifications. In the story “The City of Ember” Doons father tells him, “The main thing is, pay attention. Pay close attention to everything, everything you see. Notice what no one else notices, and you'll know what no one else knows. What you get is what you get. What you do with what you get, that's more the point.” This means that maybe if Doon pays more attention to his surroundings, he might expand his knowledge in education and find a way to save Ember. If he had done this he might have found a solution to the pipes being in awful quality, or maybe even fix the generator.

Also, Ember and Earth do have their similarities with each other. Ember and Earth both still have people and everyone speaks the same languages. Ember still can have natural activities in it. Ember has a river flowing through the city and Earth has many rivers and natural activity in it also. Ember and Earth both have schools and mayors. Both of which get an education and keep the city under control. Ember has patrol and laws, as does Earth. These laws are enforced very much in Ember as well as they are in Earth. Ember has water supply and electricity in it just like Earth does. Every little thing matters in Ember and in Earth.

As you can see, this is how Ember relates to Earth as it is today. Without many things we have today, life would be very complicated just like it is in Ember. If we didn’t have all the things we have on Earth today, think of how life would be. It would be dull, boring, and completely different. I can’t even imagine living in Ember. Without all the technology we have today, life would be so different and it would be chaotic. Doon, Lina, and the rest of the people in Ember have it pretty hard. There isn’t much activity in Ember and there is very little crime, but it’s much different in Earth because the habitat is so much bigger.

Voices from another World

Authors note: The author’s purpose for writing this is to show you an extended scene from the book “The City of Ember” after Lina’s grandmother had past on.

Have you ever thought about what might have happened between scenes? In the story “The City of Ember” Lina’s grandmother past away after a dreadful night. Lina and her baby sister Poppy were left without any family, no one, just each other. Lina soon realizes what she must do in order to saver herself, Doon, Poppy, and the other citizens of Ember; she must unscramble the secret note with the instructions on how to escape Ember. If these instructions hadn’t been found, well that just might have been the end of mankind. Although Ember is a satisfactory living area, it’s time to leave the city and go back to Earth, the place where the people before them had come.

That night that I had fallen into a deep slumber, I heard a voice from yonder, from a great distance away. It sounded like someone trying to contact me. If so, it must’ve been important. The voice was vague and scratchy. I couldn’t quite make out the words. As the time past while I was in this extraordinary exquisite world, I could hear this voice getting clearer, and clearer, and clearer, until suddenly, I could hear what this voice was saying. It sounded like granny trying to contact me, but how? Was this even possible? No, it couldn’t be, there’s no way, granny is dead and this is just a dream, so it mustn’t be real.

All of a sudden, the voice calling out to me was telling me to leave Ember, to find the way out of the city before the lights went out forever leading them to eternal darkness. I responded to this drastically odd voice saying, “Who are you?” “Why are you telling me to leave Ember?” There was a delayed reply from this mysterious voice calling out to me saying that I must leave now before horrible things occur. I started to see a weird figure appearing before my eyes. The figures image grew stronger until almost perfectly visible by me. I knew who this was; it was my grandmother without a doubt. I focused in on what she had been saying. The voice was clearer than a window that had just been washed.

Suddenly, the voice spoke and said, “Lina, figure out the secret message quickly, it will show you how to get out of Ember!” I listened to what my grandmother had said and followed her instructions very precisely and did as she said. I decided to make a plan, but I had to do this when the time was just right. Since the instructions had something to do with the pipe works, I would ask Doon Harrow for his assistance and to come with me and Poppy on our voyage to leaving Ember. We must act quickly though, before someone gets on our case. I shall now run to Doon and inform him about my plan as soon as I’ve fully figured out what is going to happen.

As you can see, this clearly creates a well fitting scene in the book the City of Ember. Lina had heard this voice for a reason and must use it to her ability. The voice she had heard of her granny was the key to escaping Ember, Lina knew how to get out and how to flee the city, but she would need help from Doon. If Lina hadn’t figured the instructions out as soon as she had, I don’t think she would’ve escaped Ember soon enough before the whole city’s power had gone out. Although Ember is a satisfactory living area, it’s time to leave the city and go back to Earth, the place where the people before them had come.

The Significance of Ember and its People

Authors Note: the author’s purpose is to show you how the character Doon can relate to the phenomenal quote in the book “The City of Ember”.

Have you ever had someone tell you to pay more attention to your surroundings? In the book “The City of Ember” has a quote that really made me stop and think about this, the quote is, “The main thing is, pay attention. Pay close attention to everything, everything you see. Notice what no one else notices, and you'll know what no one else knows. What you get is what you get. What you do with what you get, that's more the point.”  To me, this means that you should always be paying attention to what’s around and maybe you’ll discover the significance of something spectacular. Although not all problems are resolved, I think Doon Harrow has the ability to do something good for Ember.

Although, Doon Harrows dad told him this after Doon had received the employment as pipes worker for Ember. Doon had listened very closely to what his father had told him and will now pay more attention to the little things and more attention to his surroundings. This shows when Doon figures out that the pipe works are very messed up. This is one way how he is paying attention more to what’s around him. Doon is pretty known for paying attention to the little things though ever since he was young. He always examines things very closely such as clocks and other smaller mechanisms.

As you can see, this quote shows how Doon is very precautious about knowing whats around him.  Doon is a curious kid which you may have recognized already. He’s a very eccentric character yet very curious. I believe Doons dad told him this for a reason, to help him with his job and to discover the significance of Ember. Who knows, maybe that was the key to the whole situation with something that could possibly happen later on in the story, but for now, it remains a mystery. Although not all problems are resolved, I think Doon Harrow has the ability to do something good for Ember.

War Comes to the US

Authors Note: The author’s purpose for writing this is to show you the comparison between the historical fiction book “Guns for General Washington” and the movie “The Patriot”.

Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to have fought in the Revolutionary War? Have you ever stopped to wonder how our nation formed and why? In the movie, “The Patriot” a militia of men fought for our country, earned us our democracy, and won the US over. We beat the entire British army with just a militia of many men wanting to fight for our freedom. The comparisons between the book, “Guns for General Washington” and the movie “The Patriot” are anonymously both alike and different from one another. Although the revolutionary war was both tough and exhilarating, we managed to pull it off with an impressive victory over the British army.

Conversely, both the movie “The Patriot” and the book “Guns for General Washington” are similar because they are both historical fiction. In the book, “Guns for General Washington” They have a purpose for delivering the goods to Boston from Fort Ticonderoga, as does Benjamin Martin. He and his militia were trying to fight for their freedom and win the country over. Both of which had pretty much the same purpose. That purpose was to beat the British army and win their independence/freedom. The events leading up to this was because they were treated very cruelly and unfair by the British.

However, another way they are alike is because the militia, Will Knox, Henry Knox, and General Washington all succeeded on their expeditions. Will and Henry successfully delivered the goods to General Washington, and Benjamin’s militia beat the British. These stories are also very alike because they are both historical fiction. Both of these events took place during the revolutionary war, but were different battles fought. Many soldiers had died in this war. General Washington’s men were killed, and many members of the militia had fallen, including both of Benjamin’s older son’s, Gabriel and Thomas Martin.

On the other hand, they do have their differences. One way they are different is because Will Knox and Henry Knox were both static characters, as Benjamin martin was a dynamic character. A dynamic character is a person who changes throughout his or her life, and a static character is someone who stays the same. Will and Henry are static characters because they don’t change that much throughout the story. He was born wanting to serve his country in war, and when the time had come, he knew he must use all his will to get involved in it. Will did get involved in it and had helped them succeed. Will’s one wish was to fight in the war and he didn’t change that wish or go down a different path, he stuck with it and fulfilled his wish. Benjamin Martin changed though. He had always wanted to fight for his country but in the end, he seemed to want things to be over. He wanted to win the war but it was not what he had planned on doing from the beginning. That is how Will and Henry are static characters, and Benjamin is a dynamic character.

As you can see, this shows many examples of similarities and differences between the novel and movie. Everyone has their similarities and differences, but I believe Benjamin’s militia was much more different than General Washington’s, Henry and Will Knox’s army. They had many similarities but if you think about them, there are more differences than similarities. . If anything, you’re most likely more different than you are a like from someone. Although this is not always true in many cases, it’s a logical accusation. George Washington once said, "To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace." This means that being prepared to fight is a sign of peace and that George Washington would much rather have peach then war.  Although the revolutionary war was both tough and exhilarating, we managed to pull it off with an impressive victory over the British army.

                                                                                                          

Conflicts in Ember

The author’s purpose for writing this is to show the major conflicts occurring so far throughout the story “The City of Ember”.

Would you enjoy living in the ground under Earth for your whole life time with limited supplies and not much to do? In the book “The City of Ember” is the generator. Ember is losing all of its power and is slowly degrading. If the people of Ember don’t do something about this soon, all power in Ember might be lost and the lights may go out forever. However, young former students Doon and Lina who recently attended school in Ember and had just recently graduated is going to do everything he can to help fix the generator so that not all is lost for those who still live. Although Doon and Lina have a limited amount of time to save Ember, not all is lost.

Although all power might be lost and the lights may go out forever in the small City of Ember, there is still hope. If Doon can come up with a resolution to fix the generator in time then not all might be lost. If he is able to find out the compound structure of the generator then maybe he might be able to know what’s wrong with the generator. This would be very difficult though because he is not experienced with major facilities such as the generator powering the city. On the other hand, it would make Lina and Doon’s lives much easier if they could find an escape route from the city.

As you can see, this shows many resolutions on how Doon and Lina can help save not only the people of Ember, but the City as well. If only they could find a way to escape then everything would be so much better and easier and they could live life on earth where things are much safer and more efficient. Things would begood if they could fix the generator though. Although Doon and Lina have a limited amount of time to save Ember, not all is lost.

Why Xbox 360 is the Best Game Console Ever

What’s your favorite video game console? Do you have a preferable video game? I believe Xbox 360 is the best game console ever. It’s better than all other consoles, such as PS3, Wii, or any handheld devices. If I could, I would become a dictator and hypnotize the whole world into buying an Xbox so that it would be on the top of the list for best game console ever, not like it already isn’t. I hate PS3’s! If I could I would destroy all of them in the world. I would even prefer to have an Xbox over my phone! Although I don’t play Xbox very often, I think it’s the best game console out there because of its many necessities, high quality graphics, and more!

Although there are many different game consoles out there, Xbox is the best station ever because it has amazing quality. Graphics are a big deal to me, and to others I would assume. Xbox has great graphics. The graphics almost make you feel like you’re playing with real life people or things! It makes you feel like you’re actually in the game. The sound is also great. It’s clear and makes you really get absorbed in the game. No other game stations have this good of quality. The PS3 is probably the second best station in quality, (although I hate it) but is still nothing compared to the Xbox’s.

Although most stations game company’s make games for all stations, there are games made only for Xbox. For example, Halo is one of these games. Halo is a game where squads of people that are in the USNC go to other planets and have to kill the Covenant. The USNC are also called Spartans. Spartans are highly trained soldiers willing to risk their lives to defend what they cherish, they are basically juggernauts’. It’s one of Xbox’s top games ever sold and has made Xbox a very popular station. Although the Wii has separate games for it too, I would still pick Xbox over the Wii. The Wii’s best selling games are its Mario games, although halo is much better because of its incredible story line to it and its HD quality.

Last but not least, Xbox 360 is the best station ever because it has Netflix and other fun accessories. Netflix is a type of Movie player that allows you to access any show you want, instantly to your game station for only ten dollars a month. You can search the web with Xbox too. There are many cool necessities such as Hulu, which is TV without the commercial. Also, with Xbox, you can buy mini games. You can also play games from the original Xbox on Xbox 360 with a hard-drive. The best thing about Xbox is Xbox live. Xbox has recently added its newest feature, YouTube. Xbox live allows you to play with people all around the world. This may also give you somewhat of a challenge.

As you can see, this proves why Xbox 360 is the best game station ever. It has the best quality, the best necessities, and the best games. This shows that Xbox is the best and no other station is in comparison with Xbox. Xbox may lead to the next generation of gaming and open up new ideas for people all around. Although I don’t play Xbox very often, I think it’s the best game console out there because of its many necessities, high quality graphics, and more!
